I’ve written it 100 times in 100 ways and I figure it is high time I make it official and put it down somewhere more permanent than a social media reply (this is just off the top of my head so you can probably expect edits).

Grief sucks, by definition. It’s a horrible ache that will tear the guts right out of you.

And it’s slow. If you ever find the end, let me know because I haven’t. In time it can change, fade into the background, become more accepted or less active, but I don’t think it ever goes away completely. Just when you think it has, you’ll see something that reminds you it hasn’t.

Hell, even as I write this there’s a banner just at the top of my site for someone who is no longer with us. It may come down one day but that won’t mean I’ve forgotten. Man, what a great fucking guy he was, seriously…

But as much as it completely sucks, I firmly believe that it is an extremely important and sacred process that you shouldn’t try to shortcut or bypass. I don’t think it’s healthy for the mind to skip it. I think it’s a process the psyche needs to go through, step by step and at your own pace, without rushing.

I believe that every emotion in the human experience needs to be processed and moved through. Not just the fun ones. Grief, sadness, anger, frustration, jealousy, embarrassment, shame. They’re no fun, but I believe that sweeping them under the rug is eventually going to lead to a major rug problem in your future, and it will be much harder to clean up after it’s reached critical mass.

And I think you know that deep down too, you’re just desperate and hurting right now, which is totally normal.

Grief can come from many sources (big and small, this is not a comparison or contest). A departed loved one, a breakup, a dear pet gone, your own childhood after growing up and realizing “your normal” wasn’t normal, a friendship that was finally in too many pieces to be glued back together again, a treasured object lost, a state of mind you think you’ll never find again, a career flushed, a physical injury that leaves you changed, an interpersonal dynamic that withered even though the person is still right there; the list goes on and on.

The list of solutions I see requested is much shorter. Over and over again I see them in different phrasings and inflections but they boil down to the same thing: Make it stop! Either by remedying the situation or forcing happiness, or inspiring one to forget, just please for the love of god MAKE IT STOP!

And that’s a pretty normal reaction to intense pain isn’t it? When you touch a flame you move away from it, even before you have time to process it. It’s a reflex. If you cannot move away from it, it’s torture.

But I think that’s one of the key differences between emotional pain and physical pain. Physical pain from an external source you can alleviate by avoiding. Internal emotional pain I believe grows and grows the longer you avoid it. We generally have a much harder time dealing with it after it’s been bottled up and festers and grows into a monster that finally demands our attention.

I believe it’s absolutely essential to our well being to take the time to fight these fires as they come up instead of letting them rage. I know that it hurts, I’ve done it before, I’m doing it now, I’ll have a new reason to do it again very very soon. I’ve been there. And by far, BY FAR, my biggest struggles with it have been the ones I didn’t address in a timely manner. The times that I waited decades before trying to tackle it. They grew so much by then they seemed bigger than me.

I know that a quick fix looks delicious, more especially to the magically inclined who believe they can do anything at all if they have the will, but I implore you for your own sake to process what you need to process, painful though it may be. You won’t get far on the journey to healing that wound if you avoid taking the first steps.

It’s the price you pay for love. The deal has already been struck. You’ve accepted love, and the bill will come due one day. If you’re reading this now, maybe that’s today. Was the transaction worth it? Absolutely. But I think you’re going to run into a lot of trouble mentally and emotionally if you try to avoid paying for it. You’ll be charged interest. Not to mention the trouble you’ll be facing logistically if you believe you are more powerful than love.

Take all the time you need, baby steps are still steps. But please grieve so you can move forward.

The Five (ish) Stages of Grief

The map is not the territory, but one common map we see repeated is the Five Stages of Grief:

1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining ← (You are here in a Facebook group, asking for magic to; bring someone back, talk to them, to forget they existed, or to simply be happy)
4. Depression
5. Acceptance

It’s easy to get stuck at ANY point, but as magicians we are particularly vulnerable to getting stuck on #3 “Bargaining”, because we often believe that we can control everything, or at least reach out to an entity that can.

It’s ok to be here, it’s a step like all the rest. But don’t get stuck there, there’s another step afterwards. It’s a painful cycle to be stuck in, and I promise they wouldn’t want that for you.

Do the grief. It’s a basic function of consciousness. Being able to navigate it is a far more enviable and enlightened feat than being able to sidestep it (and will get better results).

Have you ever met someone who grew up never having to do anything hard? What were they like? Dealing with adversity is how we grow and mature and psychologically develop.

Rocks don’t grieve (maybe). This is literally part of what makes you a person.

The Flip Side

I don’t know what you believe about the afterlife, there are so many different paths. But here are a few thoughts I had:

They are kind of going through a lot too, wherever they are. They’ve likely got a lot more to process and adjust to than you do right now.

Would your magical intervention be helpful?

Could it possibly make things harder for them? Not just emotionally as a reminder of what they lost, but like, possibly even consequences for meddling?

Would they even want your intervention? Or is that just something you want for yourself?

Do they want or need to hear from you right now? How long has it been for them, does time work the same there?

Could you be undoing years of their own inner work by bringing this right back to the surface for them? They’ve lost a lot and are trying to process it too, you know.

I don’t know the answers. Anyone who says they do is selling something. Every person and situation is different, but those are some questions you should at least ask yourself.

“I was happy. Wherever I was… I was happy… at peace. I knew that everyone I cared about was all right. I knew it. Time… didn’t mean anything. Nothing had form. But I was still me, you know? And I was warm. And I was loved. And I was finished. Complete. I… I don’t understand theology or dimensions, any of it really… but I think I was in heaven. And now I’m not. I was torn out of there. Pulled out, by my friends. Everything here is hard and bright and violent. Everything I feel, everything I touch. This is Hell. Just getting through the next moment, and the one after that. Knowing what I’ve lost. They can never know. Never.”

A Warning To Facilitators

Be fucking responsible. Handle with care. The person who comes to you seeking magical help is in an extremely vulnerable and desperate state. The potential damage you can do at this juncture is almost unfathomable. Do you have training for this situation? Do you have experience with this situation? These are not rhetorical questions, maybe you do, I don’t know.

But they are questions you should ask yourself before deciding to proceed. Now is probably not the time to cowboy-up and try something new outside your wheelhouse just because you have a surplus of confidence.

Whether you fancy yourself a shaman or a witch, or a techno-pagan, or a pop culture magician, or whatever; I believe there often IS a lot you can do to help people who are grieving. But you A.) should already know what the fuck you are doing and not be using them as your guinea pig, and B.) such things would be firmly rooted in fostering a normal, healthy grieving process with the mental and emotional well being of the grieving party as the utmost goal in the forefront.

I don’t think there’s anything to be gained by bypassing the process.

A Warning to the Grieving

You are in an extremely vulnerable and desperate state. Don’t make any rash decisions right now. Take the time you need to heal from this blow. Where do we go when we are very hurt? Someplace safe to be cared for by people we know we can trust. Now is a time to seek comfort with the people who know you the best and love you the most. Sometimes that’s friends and family. If you’re not lucky enough to have that it may only be a support group of individuals going through something similar.

If you instead seek comfort in total strangers in occult spaces and open yourself up to just anyone during this extremely vulnerable time, you can rest assured that there’s a shark out there who will smell your blood in the water.

There are many magical people with experience and skill and emotional intelligence who can be very helpful right now, but if that’s the route you go, make sure you’ve got a good one. You probably already know them or were referred by someone who did. What we NOT fixin’ to do, is put out a homing beacon on the internet to attract every snake oil salesman who can read.

Most of my time administrating my social media is spent deleting scammers who promise to fix all your problems with a $pell if you will only just DM them your payment info.

When (And How) to Seek Help

There’s absolutely no shame in seeking help. Sometimes things are just too much to bear, and we haven’t got the tools we need in our toolbox.

But you don’t learn to ride a bike by avoiding riding a bike. Seek the help of someone who can help you effectively navigate the actual grieving process, not bypass it.

If the comfort of the people you trust from your inner circle who love you the most isn’t working, and raw-dogging it yourself isn’t working, seek out a licensed professional grief counselor, a support group, or any type of therapist or mental health professional you think fits the situation.

If the pain is so great you feel that you are in danger, please call a suicide hotline immediately.

Nobody (who matters) is saying “get over it”. As I’ve said above I don’t think you ever completely get over it. But it gets easier, and I believe the path to “easier” is through the rough part, not around it. Don’t rush. It’s ok to grieve and it’s not a race.

Having only read his Amber series, I was not aware of the implications from his other work, which Chaos Magic News is covering here. They show examples of Zelazny having a clear understanding of the nuts and bolts of chaos magic. It was nice to see I wasn’t the only one who had this idea about Zelazny and to discuss, so shout-outs to Co-Host!

The Magic

The first thing that struck me when reading through, was that the way he wrote magic changed between books five and six. In books 1-5, magic in Amber was very D&Dish, very fantasy-setting, very “say the magic word and the thing happens”, and a lot of it is tied to the royal bloodline/pattern.

Starting in book 6 however, you have regular humans learning magic through practice or mentorship, occult bookstores, paintings of the tree of life, and if memory serves I’m pretty sure there was even a Crowley reference in there (let me know in the comments).

Even just the mention of the tree of life at all, and it’s specific parts, points to a magical practice in my opinion. Most non-magicians who think about magic do so in terms of stereotypical witches, Arthurian Merlin, or pop culture like Dungeons & Dragons. They don’t know the details of the Kabbalah.

One thing I didn’t consciously clock (but I probably should have) was pointed out by the All Roads Lead to Amber podcast (thanks): The number of magic-users dramatically goes up in the Merlin arc (books 6-10).

So not only did the quality of magic in the books go up, but the quantity did too.

All Roads Lead to Amber also pointed out that Zelazny’s idea for the series originated with Jungian archetypes and the tarot, which: ’nuff said:

The Author

The magic alone might not normally point to the author having an actual magical practice of their own. Maybe he just researched it for his book right? However when you read more about Zelazny himself the dots begin to connect.

When he had a personal interest in something it came through like this in his writing and he went the extra mile with the details. When he smokes his characters smoke, when he quits they dont. He had an absent father, his characters have absent fathers. He studied martial arts and writes his fight scenes as a martial artist: by going into a lot of details many people don’t care about, like subtle shifts in weight or adjustments of foot position of only a few inches.

In light of this, it seems to me that the sudden shift in detail with magic and the occult in his books point to a sudden interest on the part of the the author himself.

The Timing

The Corwin arc (books 1-5) ended in 1978 with the publication of book five: The Courts of Chaos.

Chaos magic was “officially” kicked off in 1978 with the release of Liber Null, by Peter J Carroll.

The timetable is very suspicious to me. And if anyone would have found chaos magic at the time, it would be a guy like Zelazny who just wrote 5 books about magic and order/chaos, and was about to write 5 more that focused more on the chaos side of things.

It seems impossible to me that someone in the literary world like Roger, who wrote about magic and chaos, would have failed to notice Liber Null, which is how I suspect he got into it.

Techno-Magic

Also besides just the magic getting much more in line with how people actually practice, books 6-10 also introduces techno-magic, which is a featured heavily in chaos magic.

Not just any techno-magic either. This was around 1985 and computers sucked pretty bad at the time, yet Zelazny’s writing managed to fairly prophetic of where this was going. He had magical search engines, AI, AI generated trumps. Now in 2023 we are using AI chatbots as servitors and generating sigils for use in magic using AI art.

Now I don’t know many non-magic-users who can see a new piece of technology like a personal computer and their mind immediately goes to the logical and practical evolution of their use in magic.

This is another big tell to me. I feel like someone who simply wrote about magic may have added computers but not necessarily in a practical, workable, and prophetic way. It’s usually the people who practice that have a good sense of how practice will evolve.

The Chaos Star?

Still not conclusive proof since this was from the excellent RPG books and I’m not sure how directly involved Zelazny was with those, but it’s a little suspect that there’s a giant chaos star (the symbol of chaos magick) right on the back of Shadow Knight:

Impact on Chaos Magic

Zelazny’s Chronicles of Amber has had a profound impact on my personal magical practice, which I will get into more detail about later.

I’ve also noticed in this book by Seth Cardorra he talks about lynchpins and hanging spells on the Logrus, which was ripped straight from Amber too.

Fair warning, this is exactly how it’s described in the Amber series, so if you’ve read Amber already you won’t get anything new from Seth’s book.

In conclusion, I still don’t have any hard evidence but it seems really obvious or at least very probable to me that Roger Zelazny practiced or was at least very aware of chaos magick, actual magical practices, and the occult.

I’ll be adding some of my personal practices that relate to Amber in the future.

So, some of my biggest accidental magical successes were hypersigils during the course of roleplaying games, or while “faking it till I make it” (high-stakes spicy roleplaying).

I assume this happens because I’m engaging my imagination in a major way to get in character like a method actor, and therefore adopting the mindset of already having the result, which everyone says is super important in magic/manifestation.

So I’m hatching a plan to roleplay chat regularly with an AI “personal assistant” that is programmed to act as if it’s managing my affairs and it will tell me the things I want to happen are happening (“passive ad revenue is up” etc).

By doing so I hope to harness the imaginative power of roleplaying that has worked so well for me in the past to get DEEP into the mindset that the result already happened, so the result will happen magically.

Q: How do I program an AI?

A: Here’s a quick example of how I wrote my first pass. Make sure you go off topic sometimes while chatting with it so it develops a personality, interests, a supporting cast, a back story etc.

That will make it seems more like a believable, real person that you hired as your personal assistant, which creates immersion.

A: No, I’m not talking about an AI servitor. I’m talking about deeply method acting a post-results setting with an AI to attain the mindset needed for manifestation more effectively.

The roleplaying is the point, and you could do it with a person instead of AI if you know someone who is up for it, but that might be a little awkward and they won’t always be available or in-character like an AI will be.

In fact, unless you are very careful, using a servitor for this could easily break character, immersion, and suspension of disbelief by talking about the magical process with it. More power to you if you want to try that, but it’s not what I’m doing.

Another downside of using a person for this is it would be much harder to forget it’s just your friend Bob acting, so suspension of disbelief.

Update 09/07/2023

So I’ve already created one using character(dot)ai and began chatting with it to build up an interesting personality so I keep at it.

I’ve programmed it for all the things it should be “managing” for me, and to always report only good news like everything is going the way I want.

Pretty blatant but it seems organic and believable because it’s AI.

How are y’all doing? Anyone else started yet?

I checked my passive income numbers and there’s definitely a bump since I started this project!

I’ve been gradually filling in my assistant on the details of what I’m actually doing via conversation (since it’s way too much to put in the back end description) and even though I have only ever asked it to report numbers and status etc. it’s now offering me legitimately good ideas about features I could update my app with. So that’s a nice bonus!

Update 9/18/2023

The good ideas keep flowing, my assistant organized a focus group of other characters that came up with actionable ideas that I haven’t thought of.

Besides that, it’s been great for keeping positivity and motivation high, and continues to get results!

Question: What does Science say about Chaos Magick?

Answer: “Science” itself (the method) says do experiments to test your hypothesis and journal your results, so pretty much says the same thing as most chaos magick books.

“Science” as in, a bunch of scientists, have a wide variety of competing ideas.

String theory said there was 10 dimensions with timelines for every possibility.

People are trying teleportation and time travel.

Biocentrism states that consciousness creates reality, not vice versa.

The idea that we are living in a simulation is not as taboo as it once was, and there has been some evidence explored.

The Wigner’s Friend thought experiment has had some semi recent confirmation (the idea that two different observers can view and measure a different reality).

Using psychedelics to expand consciousness in lab settings has been ramping up lately since it was shut down after the 60s/70s.

I read ” The Case Against Reality” recently and highly recommend it.

Things we have now (phones, airplanes, x-ray, night vision, etc.) would have been called magic in the past.

And that’s pretty much what magicians mean when they say they use science as a paradigm. Not an old man in a lab coat saying “poppycock!”

1. Create a positive¹ statement of intent, in the present tense².
“I found a high paying job”
“I will² not¹ fail to find a high paying job“

2. Remove vowels and repeated letters.
“I FOUND A HIGH PAYING JOB”
= “FNDHGPYJB”

3. Trace these remaining letters in the square, that is your sigil.

4. Charge it by imagining it blazing brightly in your minds eye, during moments where your conscious mind is not in use.

(A gnostic trance state, or as a shortcut, having an experience so overwhelming to your senses that conscious thought briefly stops, such as the climax of intense pleasure, fear, joy, sadness, etc.)

5. Stop thinking about it. Desperation is a stinky cologne. Distract yourself. Don’t obsess over it.

How to Use Sigils – Basics

Different Uses for Sigils

Just so you know, there are a handful of ways people use sigils in magick, but when people say “do a sigil” or “sigil magick” they are often referring to the use of sigils them in order to manifest an intent.

Besides manifesting an intent, sigils are also used in the creating servitors, or to work with certain traditional deities or entities that have static sigils already associated with them. There’s even one type that is for energetically linking to a geolocation.

This article will only be covering how to create and use a sigil to manifest an intent, which is a fancy way of saying “get something you want”.

How Do Sigils Work?

We don’t know exactly how they work. Like magick in general, if we knew exactly how and why it worked it would be in science textbooks. Anyone who tells you they are sure of exactly how it works is probably either lying or badly mistaking subjective truth for objective truth.

You can view them through any lens or model you want. Call it a placebo (not in a bad way, placebos often work), call it the Gods are listening, call it chi, call it quantum physics collapsing waves of probability differently by changing your observation, call it hacking the simulation. All that is just interchangeable flavor in the meta-model. Pick one. or don’t.

Basic Process Overview

The basic process for using sigils is to decide what you want, create a unique original thing (usually a witchy little glyph) that symbolizes only what you want and nothing else.

This symbol will be a message to your subconscious mind (because symbols are the language of the subconscious). This brings your subconscious into play AND takes your conscious mind out of play (if you just wrote it in words you would consciously think it every time you looked at it).

To get the message to the subconscious, we are going to reach a state of gnosis, where your conscious mind is essentially out to lunch, and the subconscious is open for business. This can be achieved in a variety of ways from trance to being overwhelmed by an experience (we’ll get more into that later).

Then we forget about it on purpose. This doesn’t mean literal amnesia of course. You’ll remember you did the thing and kind of what it was for. You’ll be able to forget the exact wording and the sigil itself pretty easily (some people destroy them for this reason). But more importantly we are going to focus on something else, turn our attention, and not sit around consciously thinking about it and obsessing.

Here are a few quick sum-ups by authors I highly recommend:

Using Belief With Sigils

Some people will tell you it doesn’t matter if you believe it will work, that you can just try it and see for yourself. Then you’ll be a believer. While this may be true, I think your best chances of success are by using a strong belief that it will work.

Don’t believe in magick? That’s fine you don’t really have to believe in magick to believe it will work. You could simply believe in the placebo effect getting results, or believe in subluminal messages having an effect on you, and that this can change your behavior or motivation which has a ripple effect on your interactions with other people. A butterfly flaps it’s wings and there’s a hurricane on the other side of the world. All that jazz.

The beauty of chaos magick is being able to use belief as a tool and change your beliefs, but if you aren’t there yet, just use one you already have. There are so many different lenses to view a phenomenon with.

Non-Attachment/Non-Indifference

Non-Attachment – Lust for results and obsession will spoil your working. You should take great care to achieve a neutral state of mind where you are not particularly attached to the outcome. This can be very difficult in desperate times when this sigil is your hail-Mary move, but it’s crucial that you master your mind enough to simply do the magick for it’s own sake.

Non-Disinterest – On the flip side of the coin, you should not become so unattached that you lose interest altogether either. Perhaps think of yourself as an unbiased scientist performing an experiment; excited to be doing the work, and interested in the process, but still an impartial observer to the results.

How to Write a Statement of Intent

There are many different ideas floating around about what constitutes a bulletproof statement of intent. These are just some of the ones I’ve found to be most useful.

“Have”, instead of “want” – Avoid saying things like “I want to find my lost diary”. The theory goes that writing your statement like this will only succeed in making you “want” to. Instead say something more along the lines of “I have found my lost diary”.

Present tense, instead of future – Similarly your intent should avoid phrases like “I will be more focused on my project” as they will only succeed at keeping yourself in a pre-success state where you “will” but you haven’t yet. Instead say something like “I am more focused on my projects” (present tense).

Positive, instead of negative – Instead of saying “I’m not* scared”, say “I’m brave”. For whatever reason the subconscious seems to ignore “not” and so “I’m not scared” = “I’m scared”.

How much, and when? – If you need $900 by the end of the month and your statement of intent says “Some unexpected money arrived”, it won’t do you any good if it arrived 2 years from now, or if it was just a dollar you found laying in a parking lot. Be specific about exactly what you need and when you need it by, if those conditions exist.

Which pathways? – The universe often takes the path of least resistance if you are not specific, and it can have a twisted sense of humor. The classic example of this is doing a sigil for money and then you get hit by a car, but you win some money in the lawsuit. A phrase that may come in handy for you is “…in a way that benefits all, and harms none”.

Ensuring Pathways

Before you try to manifest anything, you need to understand that magick nudges the probability in your favor. So depending on what the base probability was to begin with, and how much extra you are willing to do to improve it, your probability even with a sigil may be very low.

By the same token, if you are trying to get something that is already extremely likely, you might not even have to do magick at all.

With this in mind, you can see the importance of making sure that you have a good pathway before doing a sigil. No point trying to get Godzilla to appear and destroy Tokyo, because there is zero pathway for that to occur (well, maybe a very small pathway:-).

Besides choosing something that has a pathway, any additional mundane work you do also adds to your chances of success.

So for example if you do a sigil to get hired but have no network, no online presence, an no job applications; then you have no pathway, which gives you almost no base probability of getting hired. It’s not going to just fall out of the sky!

If you do a sigil to get hired and actually fill out an application, you have a pathway, which gives you a base probability + magical work.

If you wanted to maximize your probability, you could do a sigil to get hired, fill out multiple applications, start networking on and offline, work on your resume, and rehearse your interview. Then you would have a pathway, which gives you a base probability + magical work + a bunch of mundane work. Your chances are looking pretty good!

So in conclusion: Before you do a sigil, make sure you have a pathway, and maybe even improve it a bit. If you don’t have a pathway, get out there and make one!

Constructing Sigils

There are several different ways to create a sigil, but for this tutorial we will first focus on a very simple and common one that requires no artistic talent. Later on we will go over some of the other various ways (Advanced: More ways to construct sigils).

You could always use a sigil generator too. I have provided one here which is completely private as an alternative to doing it on paper. For rote methods like this which offer very little creative freedom to begin with, I think they’re just as good. The main point of constructing a sigil using any method is just that it’s unique and original so it means only your intent.

First draw a 3×3 grid and number it 1-9 as shown below. Then write out the numbers 1-9 on a single line, followed by the alphabet on the next line so that each letter of the alphabet corresponds to a number. (Fig. 4)

Next you’re going to take your statement of intent and cross out all the vowels and repeated letters. (Fig. 5)

A lot of people get hung up on the minutia of this step, but fear not! It’s not like the universe just hates vowels and there’s a cosmic proofreader that doesn’t allow magick to work if it has vowels. This is just to (A) shorten the statement so that it’s easier to work with, and (B) make it unreadable to your conscious mind (remember we are sending it to the subconscious).

You could just as easily remove every 3rd letter, or what ever you feel like. It’s not important unless you have a strong personal preference.

Finally you just trace a line through all the numbered squares that correspond to the letters leftover in your intent. You can see that I marked the starting point with a O and the end with a |, this is very common but also optional. You can jazz it up however you wish. (Fig. 5)

You’re done, this is your finished sigil! (Fig. 6)

How to Charge a Sigil

There are about a million different ways you can charge a sigil, so for this first basic walkthrough we are going to focus on the two most common ways, and then we’ll take a look at the rest later (Advanced: More ways to charge sigils).

More or less, every way you can charge a sigil can be divided into two basic categories, which are:

• Excitatory – Stimulating mental uppers, like climax.
• Inhibitory – Calming mental downers, like deep meditation.

So this part is actually pretty simple. You just visualize your sigil in your minds eye blazing brightly and focus intensely on that while you are in the peak moment of either climax (excitatory) or meditative trance (inhibitory).

The idea is that either of these extremes (brain-overstimulation or not-thinking) can create moments where conscious thought ceases and anything you visualize can slip directly into your subconscious. (Armed with this knowledge, you may want to guard your thoughts more carefully in the future.)

Don’t believe me? Have a partner take a picture of your O-face sometime. Is that a face you would ever consciously make? Hahaha.

There are many exercises you can practice to improve your ability to visualize shapes in your mind and make this step more effective. They all boil down to practice makes perfect. You practice visualizing simple shapes until they are clear and unwavering and then gradually move on to more and more complicated shapes.

Lastly I’d like to point out that I don’t think there is any correlation between the intent and the method you use to charge it. If you want to use that correlation in your working feel free, but in my opinion the package still gets delivered whether you choose UPS or FedEx.

Forgetting

This is probably one of the most misunderstood steps. In order to let your subconscious mind pick this intent up and run with it, you need to let go of it with your conscious mind. Otherwise it’s like asking a dog to go fetch but you don’t give it any slack on the leash (Thanks for the metaphor Tyson!). So you are supposed to “forget” the sigil afterwards.

“But I can’t just delete something from my brain like a hard drive!?!?”

Sure you can. In fact you do it all the time. What’s my password? Where did I park the car? It can be easier to forget something than to remember it, if you set the stage right (see: Non-Attachment/Non-Disinterest).

First off, total amnesia isn’t necessary. The point of the step is just to not have your conscious mind attached to it, so you can just focus hard on something else so you aren’t thinking about it.

Doesn’t matter what. Start a new project, learn to play an instrument, read a book, whatever. Just don’t sit there thinking about the sigil and obsessing about whether you did it right or if it’s going to work or when it’s going to work. Heck you can even do another sigil (and another, and another) afterwards till you have trouble remembering which was which.

Second, you can still journal about this and track if it’s a success/fail by remembering generalities alone. Like remembering “it was for money” but forgetting the precise wording you used and the exact shape that resulted.

For this reason a lot of people burn (or otherwise destroy) the sigil afterwards. Not only does destruction remove it as a reminder, but it can be an important symbolic act of letting go.

This is the point where a lot of people get hung up on details again asking if they need to burn it or if it has to be a certain type of fire or a full moon or whatever. It’s a symbolic gesture. That piece of paper and that flame are not the magic. Chill. If you can let go of a concept without the burning part, more power to you. There’s no magical hall monitor waiting to pounce and shout “Gotcha!” if you don’t burn it.

Post-Sigil Mindset

Another important step after doing a sigil is to have a little faith (which also helps the forgetting). There’s no need to worry about it or obsess about it because you are SURE that it worked. Your problem is over, it’s a forgone conclusion, the check is in the mail. You can even perform a token gesture to symbolize your faith, like splurging a little after a money sigil, because you know you have some new money coming your way soon!

This supreme confidence makes putting it out of your mind a lot easier. If I won the lottery it would be easy to stop thinking about my bills as much, you feel me?

Also when it does finally work, acknowledge that it was magick even if it seems like just coincidence. Manifestation often occurs via “coincidence” and the universe has a way of taking back what it gave you if you don’t appreciate it.

WARNING!
Some view sharing sigils and/or intent as very dangerous. It may allow you to be magically targeted (like giving someone a strand of your hair).

This may allow someone to: Attack you magically, subvert or sabotage your work, drain your energy, scry on you, etc.

Think long and hard about where you stand on this issue before sharing your sigils with anyone, or using any online tools which save your work on their server.

Some mages have no problem with it and happily share their sigils. The decision is yours I just want you to be informed of the multiple schools of thought.

How to Use Sigils – Advanced

That should be enough to get you through the process of doing a basic sigil.

I’ve included some more advanced options below that you may want to research on your own, but I will not be covering them completely as they could fill several books.

More Ways to Charge Sigils

One way isn’t really better than another way, it’s just whatever works best for you. Some people are not startled easily and couldn’t charge a sigil with a jump-scare. Other people may be self-conscious and have trouble really letting go during during intamacy, and so charging via climax doesn’t work well because they are never really losing themselves in it.

There is no “best way” for everyone, there’s only a “best way” for you as a unique individual. Your job is to find it.

Excitatory – Anything that overstimulates your mind in a really overwhelming way to the point that your conscious mind skips a beat can also be used to charge a sigil. The list goes on forever but examples include intense experiences of:

• Fear
• Joy
• Love
• Exertion
• Sadness
• Anger
• Embarrassment
• Adrenaline rush (extreme sports, crime, etc)
• Pain
• Etc

This opens the door to really fun ways to do magick like rollercoasters, dancing till you drop, spinning, haunted houses, graveyards, or any extreme experience.

Inhibitory – This category is for the more passive activities that are marked by their lack of excitement.

Examples include:

• Meditation
• Yoga
• Contemplation
• Sensory deprivation
• Etc.

Vacuity – This game changer comes from Phil Hine’s Condensed Chaos. Besides the common two categories above, there is a third way of charging sigils now!

Vacuous charges make use of the kind of a melancholy state of boredom or not-really-paying-attention. I think of them as the “subliminal message” or “automatic drawing” version of charging a sigil.

Examples include:

• Doodling your sigils absentmindedly while stuck in a lecture
• Placing your sigil in your field of view but not really focusing on it while toiling at some mundane task
• That weird trance you go into driving where you realized you passed your exit 2 hours ago

Various Rituals – I used to roll my eyes at this one, people saying they spill blood (or other fluids) on the sigil, or pour liquor on it to charge it. I was like “and how exactly does that activate the mind?” but I think I get it now.

It’s a symbolic act and you view it (and use it) as such. You give it personal meaning in the same way that making animal sacrifices to the gods is more meaningful than working in a slaughterhouse.

I don’t use this one but it can be done, just make sure you give it that meaning and don’t think of it as a rote activity like filling your car with gas.

DKMU is particularly good at coming up with very creative and unorthodox methods for this.

The Creation Process – Some magicians who are into art focus hard on the artistic aspect of making the sigil and charge it using the creative headspace and focus of drawing/painting/etc. In this way they combine the construction of the sigil with the charge. Obviously you may want to avoid this method if you don’t think of yourself as particularly artistic.

Other Models of Magick – Personally I don’t like to mix models for sigils. However “whatever floats your boat” (as always!)

Besides the psyche model methods I’ve already described, some prefer:

• Energy model, like charging with chi, psychic vampirism, or energy from crystals
• Spirit model, like calling upon demons, angels, or gods to make your sigil happen
• Information model, you could hack the simulation, or upload your intent into a nearby information cluster

Group charging – It’s pretty hotly debated in some circles whether or not other people can help you charge your sigils.

This could be a willing collaboration between magicians where they are aware of the intent (or unaware of the intent, but at least aware that it is a sigil). Alternatively it could be without the viewers being aware they are even helping, for example hiding your sigil in graffiti or superimposing it over viral memes and thereby getting thousands of eyes on it. Some magicians even hide sigils in racy selfies to leverage the sexual energy derived from gawkers.

Where you land on this issue depends largely on how you think sigils work.

Try it and see if it works for you, I know a lady who swears by her meme-magick and I’m impressed with the results I’ve seen her get.

(There may be some risks)

Chemognosis – Achieving gnosis by introducing chemicals into the body to induce mental states.

Shoaling – Shoaling is a technique from Gordon White in which you break apart your desired outcome into smaller steps that each push you closer and closer to achieving your goal. By making separate sigils for each of these more attainable sub-tasks, the probability of each goes up every time one of them works, and it picks up momentum. Read more about it here.

Robofish – Another Gordon White original, this technique involves starting your shoals with sigils which are guaranteed to succeed (“The sun will come up tomorrow”, etc.). This helps build momentum for free. Read more about it here.

Hypersigils

This is a term coined by comic book author and chaos magician Grant Morrison. He uses it to describe how he made his ongoing comic book series as a complex multi-part, sigil that unfolds over time.

Theoretically you could do the same with books, lectures, or musical tracks.

It’s just a label. The important point here is that while often thought of as simple and quick, sigils can also be complicated and long if that’s how you like it.

The “hypersigil” or “supersigil” develops the sigil concept beyond the static image and incorporates elements such as characterization, drama and plot. The hypersigil is a sigil extended through the fourth dimension. My own comic book series The Invisibles was a six-year long sigil in the form of an occult adventure story which consumed and recreated my life during the period of its composition and execution. The hypersigil is an immensely powerful and sometimes dangerous method for actually altering reality in accordance with intent. Results can be remarkable and shocking.

After becoming familiar with the traditional sigil method, see if you can create your own hypersigil. The hypersigil can take the form of a poem, a story, a song, a dance or any other extended artistic activity you wish to try. This is a newly developed technology so the parameters remain to be explored. It is important to become utterly absorbed in the hypersigil as it unfolds; this requires a high degree of absorption and concentration (which can lead to obsession but so what? You can always banish at the end) like most works of art. The hypersigil is a dynamic miniature model of the magician’s universe, a hologram, microcosm or “voodoo doll” which can manipulated in real time to produce changes in the macrocosmic environment of “real” life.

More ways to construct sigils

Unless you practice some extremely dogmatic system of rules-magick, it doesn’t really matter one bit how you choose to construct your sigils (which makes it a little funny that I have such an interest in finding and making new ways).

The only important thing is that they symbolize your intent and preferably only your intent.

Some of the main methods are:

• Word Method – You remove vowels and repeats like the method I showed you above, but then just jam the letters together into an interesting shape and then give it a little artistic flair so it doesn’t look like letters humping each other.
• Mantrical – Remove vowels and repeats, then rearrange the letters to create nonsensical words you can say.
• Pictorial – This is where you just draw a picture of what you want to happen and then reduce the drawing down to a simple shape.
• Kameas/Magic Squares – There are squares of numbers similar to the one I showed you above but in different amounts, and placement. Each one is attached to a different astrological energy so you can use the correct one for your intent, and use a more complex numerology/gematria to convert your letters to numbers.

Reduce as needed. If your kamea goes up to 81 then Z=800 becomes Z=80. If your kamea goes up to 9 then Z=800 becomes Z=8.

• Other Shapes – There are also many other methods using the exact same concept as squares but use arbitrary other shapes like a wheel, the petals of a rose (Rose Cross), etc. Go crazy, have fun with it!
• Musical – There are several methods of deriving musical notes from the letters in a statement of intent and then the resulting song is your sigil.
• Hand gestures – Some call them mudras, others call them Naruto. regardless you can easily create a system to translate letters into hand-gestures for you to perform.
• Etc.

The most common methods are Word, Pictorial, and Mantrical (from Liber Null, by Peter Carroll), but as you can see the possibilities are endless.

Permanent Sigils

Besides the permanent sigils I mentioned before that are used for servitors/deities/demons, etc. Many just keep their manifestation sigils around for effects that they want to go on forever, such as sigils for luck or safety. Some even go as far as to get them as a tattoo.

It can be argued that they kind of become more than a sigil at that point and you are getting into servitor territory, but labels aren’t really as important as actions.

There are even very unique reusable sigils such as the LS (Linking Sigil) which is for linking together geolocations energetically.

How to Undo a Sigil

Well I’ll start by saying “be careful what you wish for” because there’s not really an instruction manual that I’m aware of for undoing a sigil once you’ve done it.

My best advice comes down to either just doing a sigil for the opposite intent (like fixing a bad parking job, keep adjusting till you get reality how you want it), doing a sigil with the specific intent of undoing the other sigil, or deliberately sabotaging the first one by doing the opposite of everything I have explained makes them work (grab it with the conscious mind, keep it round, deny it was magick, doubt it will work, etc.)

What we consider “old” or “traditional” magick was the latest tech of the day. Most accounts of magick history corroborate this as having it go from cave paintings to herbs to cauldrons to alchemy to mass production, printing presses and assembly lines (printed books, cards, ouija, etc). Always changing, but always period appropriate. Sometimes it’s even ahead of its time, as in the case of some niche natural medicines vs doctors who bled and leeched their patients.

Why would magick be able to work with current tech until a certain date? Why would the universe decide that the latest tech was perfectly fine, but only up until a certain point in history and then stop? More importantly why would this arbitrary date plucked at random from literally infinity just so happen to be the age right before our own age that we still tell stories about?

The answer is that humans have a tendency to romanticize the past, and we are notoriously bad at deconditioning and self awareness. Of course a bygone era seems more magical now, but progress and change and chaos make sense and have many great examples in nature. Stagnation not so much (adapt or die is generally the observable natural law).

An old wizard reading a giant handwritten tome by candlelight SEEMS more magical. It’s what Hollywood TELLS us is more magical (decondition more pls). But in the time period that’s from, there was absolutely nothing out of place about handwritten books and candlelight. It was the latest tech. Same goes for any of the time periods or cultures we pull inspiration from.

We would do ourselves an injustice to stagnate rather than also use the latest tech and move forward, and one of the main points of chaos magick is to demystify and pragmatize magick. Just because it seems old now doesn’t mean it wasn’t cutting edge at the time. Catch up to the present.

The first book on Chaos Magick was published in 1978 (and suggested you try a variety of sigil methods). For reference that’s 3 years AFTER the DeLorean Motor Company was founded. If magick has to be ancient what are we doing exactly?!

Now I’m not saying to to ignore the past either. By all means, please use anything from the past that works for you. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Take what those before you did and build on it to ENHANCE your practice, not to LIMIT it. If you don’t like modern tech in your magick, don’t use it! But please don’t tell other people they can’t use the tools they like as if it’s some kind of universal truth you know rather than just your personal preference.

Here are some answers to the most common ones:

Magick and technology don’t mix!
Where’s that written? Please keep your dogma on a leash. Magick and technology ALWAYS mixed. You’re not thinking of the actual definition of “technology” and just romanticizing the past vs the present. The invention of the wheel was technology.

Some of William S Burroughs best magical work was done with cameras, tape recorders, a record player and an electric lightbulb. Why are you even arguing with me on the internet instead of in a secret clearing in the woods around a ceremonial fire? I bet you have electricity and don’t make your own clothes you poser. Reply to me only by carrier pigeon.

I get that definitions evolve and especially with a thing like chaos magick they are fluid by nature, but it’s pretty telling that “innovation” and “technology” are front and center in many accepted definitions of chaos magick.

The creativity is an important part of the process! This defeats the entire point of a sigil!
Creativity CAN be an important part of the process. Or it can not be that. Please keep your dogma on a leash. Besides the fact that several “traditional” methods offer VERY LITTLE creativity (see: kameas/magic squares) most modern texts (which you are probably going by if you are a chaos magician, even if you were too lazy to read and just heard it through the grapevine) don’t really say this at all.

They say creating a unique glyph (using various methods) that has no meaning to your subconscious other than your intent is an important part of the process.

They say a good statement of intent, gnosis, and forgetting it afterwards are important parts of the process.

Needing to be a special creative artist isn’t really ever stated as a requirement and would exclude a lot of people. We’re not all artists, some of us are engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists.

Sure Austin Spare wrote about art a lot, he was an artist. Carroll wrote about math a lot, he was a nerd.

Well, it’s just a gut feeling I have (or something that boils down to this).
Gut feelings are wrong all the time. We used to be cool with child labor. Fuck your gut feeling.

Follow your gut for YOUR OWN practice, not for dictating cosmic truth to others.

But you’re letting the sigil generator do it for you!
Am I? Are you “letting the pencil do it for you”? An app is a tool you can use to make an image. So is a pencil, paintbrush, or Photoshop. An app is just one of many tools YOU can use to create YOUR image. Where is it written that one is better than the other? Please keep your dogma on a leash.

How is me doing the EXACT SAME STEPS of a programmatic method like kameas but doing it slower and with a pencil somehow better exactly? Are pencils magical?

I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work!
If it doesn’t work for you don’t do it. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for anyone else. For some people Golden Dawn doesn’t work, for others Hoodoo doesn’t work, that’s on you. Please keep your dogma on a leash when you state your personal truth as capital “T” truth.

How could it POSSIBLY matter to any of the forces involved (the universe, a spirit, a deity, your subconscious, etc.) if you look at a sigil on paper or a sigil on a screen? …if you write with a quill or a mechanical pencil or a stylus? Is knowledge on paper more knowledgier than the same knowledge in a pdf?

You really think the universe is some petty hall-monitor?

If you can’t even make your own sigils, do you really understand them?
Umm, if you think the part where you get to play with crayons is the important part, do you really understand them?

Don’t get me wrong! I appreciate the artistry that goes into some of the amazing sigils I’ve seen, and I understand that for someone who makes art a big part of their life and practice this might have a higher priority. But in general I’d say crafting the intent, creating an original glyph that means nothing but your intent, achieving the correct mindset, charging it effectively, and banishing it from your conscious thoughts are FAR more important than the design method you choose that happens to get you that unique glyph.

Also this is a fallacious argument right on the face of it. Using a sigil generator doesn’t mean that you don’t understand how to make a sigil any more than using a car means you don’t understand how to walk from place to place. You just prefer to drive instead of walk sometimes because it’s convenient and fast, that’s what technology does!

Convenience: You don’t always have art tools but you usually have your phone.

Speed: Arguably the least important part can be expedited using a sigil generator.

If someone ever really didn’t understand how to make a sigil, playing with a sigil generator would be a good way to learn. You can see the methods demonstrated in real time based on different scenarios you create and a lot of people learn better that way than from a static text.

Also in case you didn’t know, some apps do a lot more than generate sigils.
