Background & Practice

The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram is one of the key rituals practiced by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. It can teach you about evocation and can be used for aura hygiene, energetic protection, mental clarity/focus, environmental purification, subconscious awakening.

Ritual Steps: Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP)

  1. Face east and perform the entire Qabalistic Cross

  2. Still facing East, visualize all the energy in the universe like a white light coming into you and going down through your feet into the earth till the whole planet is filled with this energy. Then extend your arm and visualize that same energy come back up from the earth, through your feet, and shoot out of your pointed first two fingers. (We will call this entire step "channeling energy" below, as you will have to do it multiple times.)
  3. With your first two fingers, draw a pentagram in the air in front of you to the east using the visualized energy from your fingertips. Visualize it glowing like a blue flame. Begin at the bottom left point of the pentagram (beginning here creates a banishing pentagram).

  4. Channel energy and thrust it right through the center of the pentagram. Visualize that making it blaze brightly. Say the first mantra YHVH (pronounced yay-ho-wah). You should say it in a drawn out forceful way that vibrates through your body (think of the classic meditative "ohmmmm"), I will refer to this as "entoning" below. You have now created a barrier to the East. You can emphasize this with a stomp of your foot to seal it.
  5. Channel energy again to draw a white line from the middle of this pentagram going to the right. Turn your body 90° as you do until you are facing South and have drawn a quarter circle from East to South.

  6. Like you did in all the previous steps in the East, channel energy, point, and visualize drawing another pentagram of blue flame to the South. Thrust through the center again and this time the mantra you entone will be ADNI (pronounce ah-don-eye) before sealing it with a stomp, and after turning and drawing the white line you will be facing West.
  7. Like you did previously, channel energy, point, and visualize drawing another pentagram of blue flame to the West. Thrust through the center again and this time the mantra you entone will be AHIH (pronounce eh-hee-yay) before sealing it with a stomp, and after turning and drawing the white line you will be facing North.
  8. Like you did previously, channel energy, point, and visualize drawing another pentagram of blue flame to the North. Thrust through the center again and this time the mantra you entone will be AGLA (pronounce ah-gay-la) before sealing it with a stomp, and after turning and drawing the white line you will be facing East once again. There should now be a complete white circle and four pentagrams of blue flame drawn around you.

  9. Take a moment to exhale, and visualize all this around you glowing brightly, and the enrgy inside you.

  10. Now you will hold your arms straight out to the sides like a cross, and evoke four archangels into your circle to protect and assist, starting with Raphael. Imagine the pentagram to the East glowing brighter and as you inhale, Raphael emerges. He's made of yellow light and holds a caduceus. He stands for the all things related to the element of air, the season of spring, and the concept of intellec (logic, reason, etc). Say "Beore me, Raphael" (pronounced raf-ee-el). Entone the name Raphael.
  11. Now without turning (still facing east), in your minds eye you will do the same thing for the pentagram behind you (West) to call forth Gabriel (pronounced gay-bree-el) holding a cup. She glows blue, and stands for The element water, the season of Autumn, and the concept of psyche (intuition, unconscious, dreams, emotions, etc). Say "Behind me, Gabriel" and entone the name Gabriel.
  12. Now without turning (still facing east), in your minds eye you will do the same thing for the pentagram to your right (South) to call forth Michael (pronounced mee-kai-el) holding a sword. He glows red, and stands for The element fire, the season of Sumer, and the concept of strength (courage, willpower, ambition, sex drive, etc). Say "On my right hand, Michael" and entone the name Michael.
  13. Now without turning (still facing east), in your minds eye you will do the same thing for the pentagram to your left (North) to call forth Uriel (pronounced yur-ee-el) holding pentacle. She glows green, and stands for The element earth, the season of Winter, and the concept of the physical realm (health, finances, magic and magicians, etc). Say "On my left hand, Uriel" and entone the name Uriel.
  14. You are now surrounded and protected by the circle, the pentagrams, and the archangels who will also aid you in your magic.

  15. Now you're gonna the last phase of the ritual by inhaling and focusing on visualizing the pentagrams blazing brightly again, exhaling, and saying "For around me flame the pentgrams."
  16. Then inhale while visualizing a hexagram in the middle of your chest, made of two triangles. A red one pointing up and blue one pointing down. Exhale saying "Within me shines the six-rayed star."

  17. Now focus on the white circle. Turn your palms up and inhale while slowly bringing them together above your head till your palms touch. As you do picture you are draging that white energy all the way up into a dome that seals above you and protects you.
  18. Now put your arms out to your sides, palms down, and do the opposite, dragging the white energy of the circle down to seal below you. It now forms a complete sphere around you.
  19. Breathe and focus on this white sphere glowing brighter.

  20. Optional: You now have a completely secure banished space and you are guarded and assisted by four archangels. You can do any type of magical working you'd like now in this space with their help in this sacred space. Or, if you are doing the LBRP for it's own sake you can skip this step. The LBRP has many benefits even if you aren't using it to banish before another working!

  21. Close out by performing the Qabalistic Cross again.
  22. Clap your hands and slowly return to a normal state of mind.
