Background & Practice

The Middle Pillar is one of the key rituals practiced by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. It can teach you about energy work, and can be used to strengthen and repair your aura.

The Middle Pillar was extensively documented and popularized by Israel Regardie in his 1938 book The Middle Pillar.

Ritual Steps: Middle Pillar

  1. Close your eyes and focuson your breath.
  2. Visualize a blinding white light, at the top edge of the universe which is the source of creation. Imagine it coming down from above you across vast distances in a column, to go right into the top of your head. As it touches your head it forms a sphere of white light at your crown. The white light represents the source.
  3. Inhale four times and visualize the light getting brighter, then say "Eheieh" (pronounced eh-hee-yay) a few times while visualizing the light getting brighter. You should say it in a drawn out forceful way that vibrates through your body (think of the classic meditative "ohmmmm"), I will refer to this as "entoning" below.
  4. Exhale and visualize the shaft moving down to your throat and creating another sphere, which is gray and represents the link betwene your conscious mind and your higher self.
  5. Inhale 4 times, then entone "YHVH Elohim" (pronounced ya-ho-way el-oh-heem) a few times while visualizing the light growing brighter.
  6. Exhale and visualize the shaft moving down to your heart and creating another sphere, which is gold and represents your conscious mind.
  7. Inhale 4 times, then entone "YHVH EloahVa Daath" (pronounced ya-ho-way el-oh-ah va da-ath) a few times while visualizing the light growing brighter.
  8. Exhale and visualize the shaft moving down to your pelvis and creating another sphere, which is purple and represents your subconscious mind.
  9. Inhale 4 times, then entone "Shaddai El Chai" (pronounced shad-eye el kai) a few times while visualizing the light growing brighter.
  10. Exhale and visualize the shaft moving down to your feet and creating another sphere, which is black and represents your physical body.
  11. Inhale 4 times, then entone "Adonai Ha Aretz" (pronounced ah-don-eye ha ah-retz) a few times while visualizing the light growing brighter.
  12. Exhale and visualize the shaft moving down past your feet deep into the center of the earth where it connects with a giant green ball of energy almost as large as the planet. This is the energy of the earth.
  13. You're now connected with the divine above and the material below, the column of energy flows through you. You can access this energy at any level.
  14. Clap your hands and slowly return to a normal state of mind.
